Laboratory for in vivo experiments

At the Department of Experimental Toxicology and Pharmacology at the Institute of Toxicology and Pharmacology, which is as a part of the National Poison Control Centre, there are premises equipped for in vivo studies in experimental animals, approved by the decision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management - Department for Veterinary Medicine and listed in the Register for experiments on animals (under number 6). This department also represents an educational basis of the Medical Faculty of the Military Medical Academy at the University of Defense in Belgrade.

The space provided for experiments on animals, as a part of the Department of Experimental Toxicology and Pharmacology, consists of the facilities for temporary accommodation of experimental animals (vivarium) and the laboratories for testing on experimental animals. The organization and all the procedures carried out in it are in accordance with the requirements of the corresponding national regulations related to all relevant procedures concerning experiments on animals (Official Gazette of RS, No.: 39/2010) and with the departmental procedures of ISO 9001: 2008 standard.

The space for temporary accommodation of experimental animals, with a constant temperature and humidity, is equipped with cabinets for a short-term stay of experimental animals (rats, mice and rabbits) during tests, with controlled lighting and airflow conditions. The food for experimental animals, clean litter, bottles and polycarbonate cages are located in the adjacent separate room. The hygiene of equipment for the accommodation of experimental animals (cages) is carried out in a special washing room intended and used for this purpose.

The Laboratory for testing on experimental animals consists of a room for temporary accommodation, preparation and recovery of animals after interventions, a room for the application of test substances to laboratory animals with a space for dissection and the collection of samples of biological materials and tissues for pathohistological analyses and a separate room for pharmacodynamic testing with a space for an analytical balance. All the procedures on experimental animals are in accordance with the law and ethical principles and they can be implemented only after obtaining an approval of the competent Ethics Committee for the Protection and Welfare of Experimental Animals of the Medical Faculty of the Military Medical Academy at the University of Defense in Belgrade and the decision of the competent Ministry.

All the personnel involved in the work with experimental animals (the Study Director, Principal Investigator, Quality Assurance Officer, Researchers, Veterinary Technician, Person responsible for the pathology and therapy of experimental animals and Person responsible for the care and welfare of experimental animals) have been trained for these positions, i.e. they are holding National and/or International Certificates.
